An offer letter can look better than it is. Before you accept, make sure you understand these.
- CTC is not your salary. It includes the employer's PF contribution, gratuity, insurance and any variable pay or one-time bonus. Ask what your in-hand pay will be each month.
- Variable pay may depend on your rating and the company's results. Ask how much of it was paid out last year.
- A joining bonus may have to be paid back if you leave within a year. Check the letter.
- Bonds and service agreements: read what leaving early would cost, and get it in writing.
- Probation and notice period: how long each is, and whether the notice period changes after probation.
- Joining date and location: get them in writing, not only on a call.
